We are excited to announce the launch of a groundbreaking peer-reviewed open-access journal, Integrated Biblical and Theological Studies (IBTS). This new journal is set to contribute to biblical and theological scholarship by offering a platform for rigorous academic research that bridges both intra- and inter-disciplinary approaches to the study of the Bible and its theological impact. Rooted in academic excellence and inclusivity, IBTS is poised to become a unique hub for scholars and practitioners alike, providing a venue for innovative scholarship that engages both academia and the wider public.

Purpose and scope

The primary mission of IBTS is to revitalise and enrich the study of biblical texts through comprehensive and holistic approaches. The journal addresses the need for a robust platform that encourages collaboration between scholars from diverse disciplines. By promoting interdisciplinary integration, IBTS provides a space where the Bible’s theological significance can be explored from multiple perspectives. This inclusive vision embraces the academic community while also appealing to those outside the boundaries of traditional scholarship.

The journal’s emphasis on both intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary engagement sets it apart. It fosters discussions encompassing a wide range of topics including systematic-historical theology, biblical studies, hermeneutics, practical theology, archaeology, linguistics and more. The inclusion of social sciences, literature and the humanities broadens the scope, allowing for innovative perspectives on biblical interpretation that transcend conventional boundaries.

Interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary engagement

A key focus of IBTS is its commitment to interdisciplinarity. Recognising that the Bible’s theological and ethical implications resonate across academic fields, the journal seeks to integrate insights from history, archaeology, linguistics, literature, art and social sciences. This methodological breadth ensures that biblical scholarship is enriched by diverse perspectives, highlighting the relevance of the Bible across various contexts.

Simultaneously, the journal values intradisciplinarity within biblical and theological studies. By exploring the connections between subfields such as systematic theology, practical theology, counselling and ministry, IBTS promotes a deeper understanding of the Bible’s multifaceted implications. This includes exploring intertextual readings and synchronic research that investigates the coherence and interconnectedness of biblical narratives. This approach encourages scholars to examine the Bible not as a series of isolated texts but as a cohesive whole that shapes and is shaped by a variety of traditions.

Global reach and inclusive vision

Integrated Biblical and Theological Studies aims to be a truly global journal, welcoming contributions from scholars around the world. This inclusivity reflects a commitment to exploring how biblical texts and theological insights impact diverse cultural contexts, both Christian and non-Christian. The journal’s international scope fosters dialogue across borders, making it a valuable resource for a wide range of academic and religious communities.

This dedication to fostering diverse perspectives ensures that the journal remains a leading voice in the field, promoting a more inclusive understanding of biblical texts.

Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals

In addition to its academic goals, IBTS also aligns with several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting spiritual well-being, ethical decision-making and fostering a sense of purpose and belonging. Hence, articles that explore the relationship between biblical teachings and mental health, compassion and empathy are integral to this vision. Furthermore, by offering a platform for high-quality scholarship, the journal supports inclusive education and lifelong learning, reaching scholars, students and religious practitioners alike. In addition, the journal may engage with urgent topics related to climate change and environmental stewardship through eco-theological perspectives.

Content and readership

Integrated Biblical and Theological Studies will feature a variety of content designed to engage both scholars and the wider public. The majority of the journal’s content will consist of original research articles, which will provide in-depth explorations of biblical and theological topics. These articles will be complemented by book reviews, editorial and opinion pieces, offering critical reflections on recent developments in the field. This content mix ensures that IBTS remains a dynamic and relevant publication, addressing both scholarly and practical concerns.

The journal’s readership will encompass a diverse range of individuals, including academics, researchers, religious practitioners, students and the general public. Scholars will be drawn to IBTS for its commitment to publishing high-quality, interdisciplinary research. Religious practitioners will find the journal valuable for its engagement with practical theology and ministry, while students and the general public will appreciate its accessible content and critical insights.

Bridging a critical gap

Integrated Biblical and Theological Studies fills a significant gap in the current academic landscape. While many journals emphasise either interdisciplinary approaches or specific religious traditions, few provide a platform that integrates these perspectives in such a comprehensive manner. Integrated Biblical and Theological Studies addresses this need by promoting both intradisciplinary depth and interdisciplinary breadth, creating a space where scholars can engage with the Bible’s theological significance in ways that are both academically rigorous and practically relevant.

The journal’s emphasis on synchronic research further sets it apart. By encouraging studies that focus on the received text of the Bible in its entirety, IBTS fosters a holistic understanding of biblical texts, exploring their coherence across various contexts and traditions.

A call for contributions

As we prepare to launch the inaugural issue of IBTS, we invite scholars, researchers and practitioners to contribute to this exciting new venture. Whether you are exploring interdisciplinary connections or offering new insights within a specific theological subfield, IBTS provides the perfect platform for your work. Join us in advancing biblical scholarship and promoting a deeper understanding of the Bible’s relevance in today’s world.

We look forward to your contributions and to building a vibrant scholarly community through the pages of IBTS.
